Since the beginning of 2021, the 12th Main Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defense has organized and conducted 8 expeditions on the Novaya Zemlya archipelago with the participation of more than 100 military personnel and civilian personnel. The total length of the covered distance was more than 1.5 thousand km.

During the expeditions, a number of artifacts were discovered. So, during the exploration of the northern part of Novaya Zemlya under the leadership of the Deputy Head of the 12th Main Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defense Rear Admiral Andrei Subbotin, a well-preserved fishing boat was discovered and delivered to the point of permanent deployment. Vessels of this design were used for fishing in the waters of the White and Barents Seas from the 15th to the 20th centuries.

In the course of research at Cape Baranye, the remains of an ancient cross were discovered, presumably installed in 1822 by one of the founders of the Russian Geographical Society, Fyodor Litke. The assumption is based on data obtained from the study of archival documents of the 19th century.

The Northern Fleet and the 12th Main Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defense, together with the Russian Geographical Society, will conduct a comprehensive expedition to the Novaya Zemlya archipelago in August 2021 within the framework of the project “The Main Facade of Russia. History, events, people ”.
