Servicemen of the 12th Main Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation have begun a historical experiment to reconstruct the routes of the expedition of the famous Russian traveler of the 18th century Fyodor Rozmyslov in 1768-69.

To date, on foot, on two-link transporters “Aleut” and with the use of a boat “BL-820”, studies of the shores of the Matochkin Shar Strait from Cape Stolbovoy to Cape Morzhovy have been carried out. By the end of the year, 12 GUMOs will reconstruct other routes of the long-term expedition of one of the first Russian polar explorers.

The routes laid out by Fyodor Rozmyslov made it possible to describe the Matochkin Shar Strait, measure it, determine its total length, and also provide important information about the fauna and flora of Novaya Zemlya, about the geological and climatic features of the region.

The event is held in accordance with the methodological recommendations of the Marine Arctic Complex Expedition of the Institute of Heritage. DS Likhachev in two groups.

Fyodor Rozmyslov – navigator, traveler of the 18th century, who laid the foundation for Russian research on Novaya Zemlya.

On a ship with a small crew, on July 10, 1768, he left Arkhangelsk and on August 6 was off the coast of Novaya Zemlya. During the expedition, Fyodor Rozmyslov made meteorological observations and geodetic work. In the summer of 1769, Fyodor Rozmyslov reached the real mouth of the Matochkin Shara, but, being unable to sail further, had to return to Arkhangelsk. The result of his work was a detailed inventory of Matochkin Shara.
