Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov took part in a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO CFM) on July 13-14 in Dushanbe.
Priority attention was paid to the substantive content of the forthcoming meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO Member States in September, which will be held under the sign of the 20th anniversary of the organization’s creation. The leaders will analyze the results of joint work over the past period, determine the main guidelines and priority steps to give the SCO a new dynamic and quality, and to enhance its role in world affairs.
The ministers reviewed the progress in preparing documents designed to promote cooperation between the SCO member states in the spheres of politics, security, economy and humanitarian ties. Common approaches to solving multifaceted tasks will be reflected in the Dushanbe Declaration of the Twentieth Anniversary of the SCO, profile programs and action plans. Expert study of the relevant projects continues.
The state of affairs in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in the context of the withdrawal of foreign troops from this country took a special place among the topical international and regional problems on the Ministerial Council agenda. With the participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the IRA, a meeting was held in the format of the SCO-Afghanistan Contact Group. At the meeting adopted by the heads of the foreign affairs agencies of the SCO member states a statement In particular, it confirmed the principled position on the lack of alternative to the settlement of the conflict in Afghanistan through political dialogue and the implementation of an inclusive peace process by the Afghans themselves and under the leadership of the Afghans themselves.
