The meeting was also attended by the US Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan.

“The problem of climate change, in particular, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, is one of the most important areas of work of the Russian Government in accordance with the instructions of the President. In solving these global problems, we rely on the advanced scientific research of Russian scientists, as well as on primary data that are collected practically around the clock from all over the country right here, in the Government Coordination Center, ”Dmitry Chernyshenko emphasized, presenting the RF Government Coordination Center to the American delegation …

The Deputy Prime Minister spoke about the successes Russia has achieved in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving the overall environmental situation in the country.

Russia is one of the few countries that has managed to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions since 1990.

“We are among the world leaders in this area, as well as in the growth rates of the absorbing capacity of Russian forests. The carbon intensity of the Russian economy has doubled since 1990. This means that Russian industrial enterprises today have become twice as environmentally friendly in relation to the inhabitants of our country and the whole world. In the near future, a large package of climate regulations will be adopted in Russia, which will allow us to organize the process of measuring and trading emissions. Sakhalin will be the first region where the new practices will be applied. Another important area of our work is the expansion of the use of renewable energy sources, this is nuclear and hydropower. In addition, hydrogen energy is an important element of Russia’s adaptation to the energy transition. A working group has been set up in this area, and active work is underway, ”Dmitry Chernyshenko said.

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that Russia and the United States are among the countries with the largest volumes of greenhouse gas emissions, which means they can effectively cooperate in solving this problem. In particular, cooperation is possible in the field of monitoring forest fires – a disaster that affects many countries. On this issue, the Russian and American sides agreed to work together.
