Russian servicemen and veterans of the 201st military base in Tajikistan took part in laying wreaths and flowers at the place of death of border guards and servicemen of the 201st motorized rifle division. The event was timed to coincide with the 28th anniversary of the battle at the 12th border outpost.
A memorial rally at the site of the death of the defenders of the border outpost in 1993 took place between Tajikistan and Afghanistan near the banks of the Pyanj River.
Servicemen and veterans of the 201st military base, border troops arrived at the scene of the tragic event. After honoring a minute of silence in memory of the officers and soldiers who died in the battle, those present laid wreaths and flowers at the erected memorial. As part of the event, Priest Roman Chebonenko, assistant commander of the 201st military base for work with believers, held a memorial service for the victims.
For reference: in 1993, groups of militants from Afghanistan tried to break into the territory of Tajikistan. Forty-five Russian border guards held back the attackers for more than 11 hours until reinforcements arrived. Twenty-two Russian border guards and three servicemen of the 201st motorized rifle division were killed but did not retreat. Six were awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation, including four posthumously.
