Order dated July 17, 2021 No. 1981-r

Over 1 billion rubles will be allocated to Roshydromet to finance the completion of the construction of the Arctic platform “North Pole”. The order was signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.

The new platform will be self-propelled. She will be able to be not only on ice, but also in water, which will allow Russian polar explorers to resume long drifting expeditions. Their implementation was interrupted due to climate changes in the early 2000s, which led to a decrease in ice thickness in the Arctic.

From the opening remarks by Mikhail Mishustin at an operational meeting with the Deputy Prime Ministers, July 19, 2021

There will be a helipad in the stern of the vessel, and its total length will be more than 83 m. Such dimensions will allow accommodating more people than in traditional drifting stations, as well as even more equipment for scientific research. The results of such studies are important for understanding global processes of climate change, as well as for preparing and implementing plans for the development of the Arctic and ensuring the operation of the Northern Sea Route.

The money allocated from the Government’s reserve fund will help complete the construction of the platform in 2021 and conduct mooring and factory sea trials in 2022.

The issue was discussed at meeting with deputy prime ministers on July 19.
