The crews of Mi-8 helicopters of the Army Aviation of the Western Military District (ZVO) during July 20, 2021, performed 11 water discharges with a total weight of over 26 tons during the fight against forest fires in Karelia.

Upon arrival in the emergency area, the pilots of the Western Military District immediately began to perform tasks to eliminate the most dangerous areas of fires that threatened the nearby settlements.

Thanks to the skilful actions of the pilots, the crew of Mi-8 helicopters of the ZVO army aviation managed to stop the spread of a forest fire on the outskirts of the village of Naistenjärvi in ​​the Suoyarvsky district of the Republic of Karelia.

From the morning of July 21 this year. the flights of the Mi-8 helicopter crews of the ZVO army aviation will continue, both for monitoring the fire hazardous situation, and in order to extinguish fires directly in the emergency areas.

If necessary, the military aviation group of the Western Military District, used to fight forest fires in Karelia, will be strengthened, depending on the current situation.

In accordance with the decision of the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, General of the Army Sergei Shoigu, the commander of the Western Military District, Colonel-General Alexander Zhuravlev, sent to the Republic of Karelia two Mi-8 helicopters of the army aviation of the Leningrad Army of the Air Force and Air Defense with the fires.
