Treatment of patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease with traditional oral medications does not provide the desired quality of life. This is a very serious disease of the nervous system, as a result of which the neuronal cells of the brain are affected.
According to the associate professor of the Department of Nervous Diseases of the Military Medical Academy, Lieutenant Colonel of the Medical Service Alexander Kovalenko, patients with advanced stages of Parkinson’s disease spend most of their time in a state of “off”. This is because our own cells stop producing dopamine.
“Dopamine is the main neurotransmitter we need when we move. Patients with Parkinson’s can barely walk, their hands are trembling, they themselves are bent. This is because there are no dopamines, so the processes of impulse transmission to the muscles of movement are affected. And there are cases when it is impossible to find the necessary drugs, ”says Alexander Kovalenko.
In the clinic of nervous diseases, with the support of surgeons of hospital surgery, clinical trials of the late stage of Parkinson’s disease have been carried out for the past 11 years. Specialists of the Military Medical Academy have developed a new method of direct administration of pre-doped drugs by installing a gastrojejunal stoma, which allows the production of the required amount of dopamine.
“The catheter is inserted into the patient’s stomach and the pre-type drugs are delivered directly to the stomach. Dodopas are constantly, dosed into the gastrointestinal tract, absorbed, and the person feels great, ”says Alexander Kovalenko about the course of treatment.
This year, the first installation of a gastrojejunal stoma was performed at the Military Medical Academy for this type of treatment. Such an operation allows to achieve a significant improvement in the quality of life of patients and return them to full-fledged daily activities.
