A transnasal endoscopic operation to remove a brain tumor was performed at the neurosurgery clinic of the S.M. Kirov Military Medical Academy. A patient admitted to the clinic complained of headache, weakness, malaise and nausea. He was diagnosed with a hormonally inactive pituitary adenoma of large size, and the clinic’s specialists decided to surgically remove the adenoma by endoscopy.

The operation was successfully performed under the guidance of an experienced neurosurgeon, associate professor of the Department of Neurosurgery, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Colonel of the Medical Service Andrei Vladimirovich Polezhaev. He was among the first at the academy to apply the experience of transnasal endoscopic surgery.

“During the operation, the diagnosis was confirmed, and histological samples were taken. During the operation, the tumor was found, as well as its boundaries. We managed to remove the tissue of this tumor so as not to damage the anatomically important structures, ”says Andrey Polezhaev about the operation.

The transnasal endoscopic experience in the removal of brain tumors within the walls of a neurosurgery clinic was first applied in 1997. To date, endoscopy has expanded the understanding of surgical wound visualization and significantly reduced the area of surgical access.

For many years, the Clinic of Neurosurgery of the Military Medical Academy has been a leader in methods of diagnosing brain diseases, complex therapy and subsequent surgical interventions of brain tumors.
