Russian Defense Minister General of the Army Sergei Shoigu opened a bas-relief at the Admiralty dedicated to the victory of the Russian fleet over the Turkish fleet in the Chesme Bay.

“There are many significant events in the military history of the Fatherland that evoke a feeling of pride in the country and its Navy. Among them is the triumphant victory of Russian sailors in the Battle of Chesme on July 7, 1770, ”the Russian Defense Minister said at the opening ceremony of the bas-relief.

He noted that the crushing defeat of the Turkish squadron, superior in the number of ships and weapon power, to the Russian fleet was inflicted thanks to the brilliant naval solutions and the unparalleled stamina and courage of the officers and sailors.

“Opening the bas-relief dedicated to the battle in the Chesme Bay, we pay tribute to the naval sailors, their merits in protecting the national interests of the state,” the head of the military department noted.

The Minister of Defense thanked the authors for their creativity. The author of the bas-reliefs that now adorn the Main Admiralty was the sculptor of the Military Artists’ Studio named after M. B. Grekova Alexey Ignatov.

In 2020, on the occasion of the Day of the Russian Navy, the opening of the “Battle of Gangut” bas-relief took place. The bas-relief “Battle of Chesme” is the next in the series. When it was created, the style of the composition “Gangut battle” was sustained.

In the center, in the background, the naval battle in the Aegean Sea off the western coast of Turkey, between the Russian and Turkish fleets, is one of the largest battles of the era of the sailing fleet. On the left are the commanders of the Russian fleet – Count Alexei Orlov, G. Spiridov and D. Elfinston. The embossed composition is also crowned with the coat of arms of the Russian Empire.

In the future, it is planned to continue a series of reliefs dedicated to landmark events in the history of the Russian Navy, such as the Battle of Sinop and the Battle of Navarino.
