Marat Khusnullin held the first meeting of the organizing committee to celebrate the 1100th anniversary of the adoption of Islam by the Volga Bulgaria

The organizing committee was created in pursuance of the President’s order. “The President of the country has repeatedly noted the importance of interethnic dialogue and drew attention to the fact that the traditions of the interfaith world are our wealth and heritage,” the Deputy Prime Minister stressed.

According to Marat Khusnullin, as part of the preparation of the program for the celebration of the 1100th anniversary of the adoption of Islam by the Volga Bulgaria, it is important to show that the development of our country is based on harmonious interreligious interaction. “Along with other traditional religions, Islam makes an invaluable contribution to maintaining interethnic peace and sustainable development of the state and nation,” he said.

To discuss the plan for the preparation and conduct of the celebration, the meeting heard the report of the Deputy Minister of Culture and the executive secretary of the organizing committee Olga Yarilova. She said that the draft plan includes 71 activities related to the construction and repair of infrastructure, the production of souvenirs, the publication of printed, digital, film and video materials. It is also planned to include cultural, educational and scientific events, exhibitions and competitions in the program.

Among the main events of the celebration are the laying of a stone for the construction of the Cathedral Mosque named after the 1100th anniversary of the adoption of Islam by Volga Bulgaria in the center of Kazan, the restoration of the Muhammadiya mosque and madrasah, as well as the creation of the Center for Tatar and Muslim manuscripts and work to improve the transport accessibility of the city of Bolgar.

The President of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov also made a presentation. He stated that the upcoming identity is not just an anniversary date, but a tribute to the ancestors who determined the life of the people. “Islam in Russia has become one of the important components of a unique multinational culture. Muslims, Orthodox Christians and representatives of other traditional religions live in peace and harmony. A striking example is the consecration on July 21 in Kazan of the reconstructed cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God and the congratulations by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of the Muslims on the holiday of Eid al-Adha, ”the President of the Republic of Tatarstan emphasized. He said that a lot of work is already underway in the republic to prepare for the celebrations. At the same time, Rustam Minnikhanov drew attention to the need to involve other regions in the work, as well as to further elaborate the financial component of the project.

Marat Khusnullin instructed all responsible federal executive authorities and members of the organizing committee to work out the plan within two weeks and finally approve it with funding sources within a month.
