Employees of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service for the Novosibirsk Region have begun installing biometric identification systems in correctional institutions. Installation of modern equipment for biometric identification of convicts has already been completed in IK-9 and KP-22.

In correctional colony No. 9, a biometric identification point is installed at the entrance to the dining room, where convicts must put their hand to a special reading device. Information about each biometric mark is sent to the automated workplace of the operational duty officer. The palm prints of the convicts are entered into a special database.

In colony-settlement No. 22, portable biometric terminals are used, which can be used both in the restricted area of the institution and in remote areas in the absence of a permanent power supply network. A portable fingerprint reader kit is used as a terminal. This device allows monitoring directly at the work site, without using a personal computer. The terminal transmits the results of personal identification in real time to the duty section of the institution. This allows the control of convicts on the territory of the institution and at the exit facilities.

The use of a biometric identification system will make it possible to better and more efficiently conduct checks on the presence of convicts. In the near future, it is planned to put into operation biometric systems in other institutions of the penal system of the Novosibirsk region.
