The Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov, congratulated the command of the Northern Fleet, submarine forces and the personnel of the strategic missile submarine division on the awarding of the Nakhimov Order to the formation. The high state award was awarded to the division for the successful development of modern underwater weapons and in honor of the 60th anniversary of its foundation. The presidential decree on awarding the formation was signed on the eve of the Day of the Russian Navy.
The strategic missile submarine cruisers division of the Northern Fleet became the first twice order-bearing formation in the modern history of Russia.
Currently, the division is commanded by Rear Admiral Stepan Kelbas. The compound includes Project 667 BDRM Dolphin nuclear-powered submarine missile cruisers equipped with Sineva ballistic missiles, and the lead ships Borey 955 and Borey-A 955A Yuri Dolgoruky and Prince Vladimir, which are armed with ballistic missiles “Bulava”.
In May 2018, the Yuri Dolgoruky cruiser fired for the first time in history a salvo of four Bulava missiles from the White Sea.
In March, the submarine missile cruisers of the formation made a simultaneous ascent in the ice of the Arctic Ocean in the Franz Josef Land archipelago as part of the Umka exercise of the Russian Navy.
Two cruisers of the formation took part in naval parades in honor of the Day of the Navy: SSBN Novomoskovsk – on the Severomorsk roadstead of the Kola Bay, and SSBN “Prince Vladimir” – on the roadstead of Kronstadt.
The 31st division of nuclear submarines of the Northern Fleet was created in 1961, its first commander was Captain 1st Rank Anatoly Sorokin.
The structure of the compound initially included the first three atomic submarines of Project 658 with ballistic missiles. During 1962, their number was increased to eight.
In the very first years of its existence, the crews of the ships of the formation set a large number of diving records: the first ice crossing from the North to the Pacific Fleet, the first dive to a maximum depth of 400 meters in the Norwegian Sea, the first salvo with a full ammunition load of three ballistic missiles. In the future, missile-carrying submariners will perform salvos with eight and sixteen ballistic missiles and will even test the launch of a satellite into orbit for the first time.
On February 23, 1978, the division was awarded the Order of the Red Banner on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Soviet Army and the Navy for success in combat training, successful mastering of new equipment and weapons.
For 60 years, 23 commanders have changed in the formation, of which admirals Nikolai Maksimov and Alexander Moiseev became commanders of the Northern Fleet. Seven officers were awarded the highest state award – the title of Hero of the Soviet Union and Hero of the Russian Federation.
