Servicemen of the Ivanovo Guards Airborne Force together with the regional public organization “Union of Paratroopers” held the traditional track and field athletics relay in memory of the Hero of Russia, Guards Major Yemelyanovich Omelkov, who would have turned 60 the day before. By order of the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation of December 23, 2020 No. 766, he was forever enlisted in the lists of the personnel of the 7th company of the guards parachute regiment of the Ivanovo airborne unit.
The race was attended by national teams from all divisions. According to the results, the first place was taken by the team of the 7th Airborne Company. The second place was won by the team of the 6th Airborne Company. The troopers of the 9th paratrooper company closed the top three. All prize-winners received cups and diplomas as an award.
The event was attended by the hero’s widow Nadezhda Petrovna Omelkova, representatives of the Department of Psychological Work of the Russian Ministry of Defense, the City Duma and the administration, as well as pupils of the Sokol youth army detachment from the village of Novo-Talitsy. The commemorative rally was opened by the commander of the guard unit, Colonel Viktor Gunaza, who recalled the history of the feat of Viktor Omelkov, spoke about the courage and heroism of the personnel during the performance of a special assignment.
At the end of the rally, those present laid flowers at the monument to the servicemen of the Guards Parachute Regiment, who gave their lives in defending the Fatherland. Also, the hero’s widow thanked the “Union of paratroopers” and the command of the unit for the memory that veterans of the movement and officers pass on to the young generation of military personnel and the younger generation of future defenders of the Fatherland.
Guard Major Viktor Yemelyanovich Omelkov in the period from May 1993 to December 1994 lived in the city of Ivanovo and served in the Guards parachute regiment as a psychologist of the regiment. During the restoration of constitutional legality and law and order in the Chechen Republic, Guards Major V.E. Omelkov was the deputy commander of the combined battalion for educational work, formed on the basis of the regiment’s parachute battalion.
On December 31, 1994, a battalion convoy moving to Grozny was ambushed by illegal armed groups. Guard Major V.E. Omelkov, seriously wounded during the attack of the militants, at the cost of his life provided cover for the unit and the exit from the encirclement of a group of soldiers and officers led by the battalion commander.
For courage and heroism displayed during the performance of a special assignment, by Decree of the President of the Russian Federation No. 231 of March 1, 1995, Guard Major Viktor Omelkov was awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation (posthumously).
