The specialists restored the historical facade and the layout of the premises, as well as repaired engineering communications and the roof.

House of Scientists named after academician A.P. Alexandrova The Kurchatov Institute is an example of Soviet monumental classicism. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and President of the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute” Mikhail Kovalchuk examined the results of the restoration of the building, as well as the improvement of the territory.

“It is very important, of course, to create a public area around the Kurchatov Institute – a comfortable one, accessible to Muscovites. Here, literally on September 1, a sports cluster will be opened, the Palace of Culture has already been restored, ”said Sergei Sobyanin.

According to him, the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center is one of the largest in the country. At one time, the staff of the center created an atomic shield and developed a huge number of research areas, which are basic for many areas of the economy. Today, a program of cooperation between the city and the SIC has been developed, two technoparks are operating – a scientific one and a children’s one.

The House of Scientists (1 Rogova Street), formerly the Kurchatov Club, was built in 1949 on the initiative of Igor Kurchatov. A plot of land with a two-story building in the north-west of Moscow was located outside the perimeter of the protected area of laboratory No. 2 of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

Artistic sketches and working drawings of the House of Scientists were made by the architects of the Akademproekt workshop, which was engaged in the construction of buildings for scientific institutions. The head and chief architect of the Academproject was the outstanding Russian and Soviet architect A.V. Shchusev.

The central facade was decorated with a classical portico with four composite columns, and the basement of the rear facade was decorated with decorative balusters. The entrance to the building is framed by paired side staircases with wide balustrades.

“This dilapidated building in the past is actually a cultural monument, first of all. Secondly, this is, one might say, probably the first House of Culture in our country. And today a fairly comfortable environment has been created here. It is important to open it for the townspeople so that they can use the landscaped square and enjoy the beauty, ”added the Mayor of Moscow.

A place to relax and socialize

In the 1950s – 1960s, the club was a favorite place for Kurchatovites. It housed a canteen for employees. Here they rested, talked, read, celebrated the New Year, held meetings of scientists with playwrights, poets, artists, directors and actors. Art exhibitions were held in the foyer, in the assembly hall – meetings, academic councils, conferences, film screenings, meetings and concerts.

Since the late 1980s, the stage of the Kurchatov Club has become available to youth rock groups. Informal artists and musicians came here. In the 1990s, the club was going through difficult times. The building was dilapidated, communications fell into disrepair, the internal layout was changed.

In 2015, the building of the Kurchatov Club was included in the list of identified objects of the cultural heritage of the city of Moscow. In 2017–2020, at the expense of the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute”, work was carried out to preserve this historical monument. The specialists put in order engineering communications and the roof, restored the historical facade and the layout of the premises.

The renovated House of Scientists named after academician A.P. Alexandrova is focused on the professional scientific community and creative youth. Meetings of the Institute’s Academic Council, Kurchatov and Alexander Readings are held here.

Schoolchildren and teachers – participants of the educational Kurchatov project discuss the prospects of modern science with scientists. Programs are being implemented to popularize the history of the Soviet atomic project, exhibitions are being held, and theatrical activities are being revived. There are chess, theater, art and dance studios.

In 2021, the House of Scientists took part for the first time in the capital’s action “Days of Historical and Cultural Heritage”.

Art objects and summer cinema

In 2019, at the expense of the city, the territory next to the House of Scientists was improved. We repaired sidewalks, laid out lawns and flower beds, planted more than 9.6 thousand trees and bushes.

A decorative fence and over 150 lighting poles were installed along the perimeter. Equipped with video surveillance. The territory was decorated with 10 art objects, including “Number Pi”, “Mobius Strip”, “Atom”, “Impossible Triangle”, “Infinity”. A summer cinema appeared on the site in front of the central entrance.

They did not forget about the fans of physical education and sports. A sports cluster with a mini-football field, tennis court and exercise equipment has appeared here.

In addition, three more territories adjacent to the Kurchatov Institute were put in order in the microdistrict: near the monument to I.V. Kurchatov, on Marshal Biryuzov Street (houses 1–43) and Maksimov Street (houses 4–8).

“Today, in a sense, an epoch-making decision will actually be made – we are returning the sports complex, the open-air cinema and so on to the residents. Therefore, I think that the House of Scientists will become an attractive intellectual center, ”said Mikhail Kovalchuk.

Science and Education Partnership

The National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute” is an important partner of the Moscow Government in the field of science and education. In 2016, a technopark in the field of modern technologies was created on the basis of one of the world’s leading scientific centers.

Currently, more than 30 companies are residents of the technopark, the main profile of which is nuclear physics research, molecular and cell biology, neurocognitive research, organic and hybrid materials science, information and communication technologies, bioenergy.

Key residents include:

– LLC “NII KM” – a leading manufacturer of industrial gases and pure gases in Russia;

– LLC “Medicine and Nuclear Technologies” – research and development in the field of medicine (oncological research), the search for oncological diseases using modern radiopharmaceuticals and high-tech equipment;

– LLC “CTV” – providing a wide range of services for the placement, maintenance and rental of IT resources, as well as services for organizing communication channels and access to the Internet, protecting resources from DDoS attacks.

In 2018, with the support of the Moscow Government, children’s technoparkKurchatov Institute.

“In addition to the professional technopark, where quite serious scientists and innovators work, there is a children’s technopark, which we have also created. And I am very grateful to the Kurchatov Institute, because it is very important to involve our young, young Muscovites in this activity. Today, about five thousand people have already passed through this technopark, ”Sergei Sobyanin noted.

Institute staff and visiting lecturers teach schoolchildren in bioenergy, robotics, nanotechnology and microelectronics. There are laboratories for natural scientific research, neurocognitive, information and nature-like technologies.

The educational programs of the children’s technopark are built on the principle of integrating science and technology. The laboratories are created by analogy with the laboratories of the Kurchatov Institute. Research and projects are carried out under the guidance of its leading researchers and specialists. This approach and educational environment allow children to form an understanding of science as an interesting, accessible and promising field of activity. During the operation of the technopark, more than five thousand schoolchildren have been trained in it.
