It is one of the world’s largest oceanographic centers, located off the coast.
10 million citizens and guests of the capital visited the center of oceanography and marine biology Moskvariumfor six years of his work. It opened to visitors on August 5, 2015.
12 thousand aquatic inhabitants live in the aquarium, representing the most different corners of the planet – from Baikal to the Amazon, from Sakhalin to Greenland. More than 600 specialists work here: aquarists, ichthyologists, veterinarians, divers. The area of the center is 53 thousand square meters.
“This is a large-scale educational and scientific complex. It is constantly developing, using modern interactive and multimedia formats in the exposition, organizing educational and rehabilitation programs. For six years it has been visited by 10 million people “, – said
Natalia Sergunina, Deputy Mayor of Moscow.
In the “Moskvarium” there are about 600 species of fish and other representatives of marine and freshwater ecosystems, including dolphins, rays, sharks, turtles, otters, and octopus. Recently, two new species of starfish have been added to the exhibition – the New Guinea pillow and the blue linchia. For all the time, more than 2.4 thousand aquatic inhabitants were born in the center. In 2021, in particular, cubs of whitetip sharks, African cichlids, Managuan cichlases, handsome chromis and bycher stingrays were born.
The complex’s aquariums and pools hold 25 million liters of water. Temperature conditions, chemical composition and other parameters are controlled automatically. In addition, specialists make a control measurement of the composition of the water several times a day. Optimal conditions for keeping aquatic life are provided by 47 engineering systems.
In March this year, the center opened a new multimedia exposition “Ocean of the Jurassic”. Visitors can get acquainted with the creatures that inhabited the ocean tens and hundreds of millions of years ago, learn about their range and period of habitation, behavior and other characteristic features.
With the help of 3D animation, based on scientific facts, 12 types of prehistoric giants, ranging in size from three to 20 meters, have been recreated. Among them are the huge lizards of the mosasaurus and basilosaurus, the megalodon shark, the reptiles elasmosaurus and pliosaurus, the predatory fish xifactin and dunkleostea.
Educational and scientific activities
The Moskvarium has developed its own educational programs for children and adolescents. It often becomes a platform for open lessons with the participation of Moscow schoolchildren and cadets.
In addition, scientific research is carried out on the basis of the center. For example, together with the A.N. Severtsov of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography at the Moskvarium study the Baikal seal.
Another area is dolphin therapy. In cooperation with the Federal Resource Center for the Organization of Comprehensive Support for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, a study of the interaction of dolphins and humans is underway.
And together with the P.P. Shirshov RAS, research is being conducted on the acoustic repertoire of dolphins.
Dolphin Swimming Center
In 2016, a swimming center with dolphins was created in the Moskvarium. Dolphin therapy courses are provided for children with musculoskeletal disorders, autism, Down syndrome, speech development, neurological and genetic diseases. The methodology combines the principles of correctional pedagogy, psychology, rehabilitation and physiotherapy exercises. In total, 14 thousand sessions of dolphin therapy have already been carried out. Three thousand families with children with disabilities are permanent participants in the program.
