Russian Defense Minister General of the Army Sergei Shoigu arrived in the Eastern Military District (VVO) to inspect the reconstruction of the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM). In Verkhnezeysk (Amur Region), he took part in the ceremony of laying a memorial stone dedicated to the beginning of the reconstruction of the BAM. “Today we have laid a stone symbolizing the beginning of the reconstruction of the eastern branch of the Baikal-Amur Mainline. This is a 340 km long section from Ulak to Fevralsk. The significance of this section of the BAM for the country’s economy is enormous, ”said General of the Army Sergei Shoigu.

The Minister of Defense also said that the reconstruction of the BAM by the end of 2024 will increase the transport capabilities of Eastern Siberia. “In addition, Russia will be able to expand its access to the markets of the countries of the Asia-Pacific region,” added Army General Sergei Shoigu. He noted that, at the moment, due to the huge congestion, the potential of the railway track has been exhausted.

At the same time, the Minister of Defense expressed confidence that the Railway Troops (ZhVD) will adequately cope with the tasks set. Already by now, modern townships have been erected along the entire section to provide accommodation and work for military railway workers.

“In addition, the necessary automotive, engineering and special equipment has been involved in the construction. Qualitatively carried out preparatory work allowed us to timely start implementing the decision of the President of the Russian Federation to increase the throughput capacity of the BAM “, – said Sergei Shoigu.

During his working trip to the Eastern Military District, the Russian Defense Minister will also hear reports from the Commander of the Air Defense Forces, Lieutenant General Gennady Zhidko and the head of the Main Directorate of the Railway Troops (Railroad Troops), Lieutenant General Oleg Kosenkov on the progress of the work. Sergei Shoigu will also meet with the students of the Far Eastern State University of Railways, studying in the military registration specialties of the railway.

In April, the Russian Ministry of Defense began construction of the second BAM track on the 340 km section from Ulak to Fevralsk. 10 brigades of the Railway Troops were involved in the work.
