On Mamayev Kurgan, artillerymen of the motorized rifle formation of the Southern Military District (YuVO), stationed in the Volgograd Region, fired a “Shot of Memory” in honor of the Day of the defeat of Nazi German troops by Soviet troops in the Battle of Kursk.

The shot was fired at 12 noon on the southern slope of Mamayev Kurgan with two ZIS-3 guns from the Great Patriotic War.

The event was attended by servicemen of the Southern Military District, a military band and an honor guard company of the district’s motorized rifle unit.

In terms of its scale, forces and means involved, tension, results and military-political consequences, the Battle of Kursk is one of the key battles of the Second World War and the Great Patriotic War.

About 2 million soldiers took part in the battles on the Arc of Fire, 6 thousand tanks and 4 thousand aircraft were involved. After the end of the Battle of Kursk, the strategic initiative finally went over to the side of the Red Army, which continued to liberate the country from the German invaders and, until the end of the war, conducted mainly offensive operations.
