“The Moscow Variety Theater turned to
City Property Departmentwith a request to provide a room for temporary storage of decorations, costumes and props. The main building of the institution is now undergoing repair and restoration work. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin agreed to secure the theater on a gratuitous basis non-residential premises with an area of 846.3 square meters, which is located at 2 Serafimovich Street, in the famous House on the Embankment, in the same place where the Variety Theater is located, ”the deputy mayor said.
The transferred premises belong to the city. Employees of the Moscow Variety Theater will be able to place stage property here in the shortest possible time. Spaces for temporary storage of decorations are provided until July 3, 2022.
How is the restoration of the theater going?
The decision on a comprehensive restoration of the Moscow Variety Theater was made in 2017. The work began last year and is scheduled to be completed by the end of next year.
“In the course of repair and restoration measures, specialists will restore the bearing capacity of structures, restore the facades of the building, and recreate door and window openings. The historic layout and interiors will be restored, including plaster stucco decoration, plastering of walls and ceilings. In the auditorium and foyer, wood parquet will be recreated. House on the embankment
The house on the embankment is one of the most significant monuments of constructivism. It was built according to the project of the Soviet architect Boris Iofan and for its time was a unique complex, says the head of the Department of Cultural Heritage Alexey Emelyanov.
“In addition to apartments, there was a developed system of services for residents, namely: a cinema for 1,500 seats, a gym, a department store, a laundry and an outpatient clinic, a savings bank and a post office, a kindergarten and a nursery. 60 years ago the Variety Theater moved into the building, and now for the first time in many years we can observe a large-scale restoration here, ”he stressed.
The Moscow Variety Theater was founded in 1954 on the initiative of a group of artists headed by Nikolai Smirnov-Sokolsky. In February 1961, the institution moved to the House on the Embankment, erected in 1928-1931 according to the project of the architect Boris Iofan.
