Dmitry Chernyshenko got acquainted with the development of scientists from the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences – the method of boron neutron capture therapy for oncological diseases. It allows you to destroy cells of malignant tumors. The isotope of boron-10 is accumulated in cancer cells, then the tumor is irradiated with a neutron flux. Boron absorbs neutrons. As a result, a nuclear reaction occurs in the cell with a large release of energy. This leads to her death.

“The method can help more than 2 million patients annually in the treatment of cancerous tumors. The advantage of therapy is that it is applied once, and the procedure time is less than one hour. Given the uniqueness of the development, it is necessary, within the framework of the state program for scientific and technical development, to determine the centers of competence that will be involved in the work on the creation of the drug, and to allocate funds to complete the study. I ask the Ministry of Education and Science to take this to work. It is necessary to start clinical trials of the drug as soon as possible, which can help doctors save thousands of lives, ”said Dmitry Chernyshenko.

A new type of charged particle accelerator was proposed and developed specifically for the formation of a new method of fighting cancer.

As noted in the Ministry of Education and Science, this year 400 million rubles were allocated to the Institute of Nuclear Physics for the development of methods of boron neutron capture therapy. Funding is planned to continue next year.

“Siberian scientists have created a charged particle accelerator with a minimum level of unwanted radiation. With its help, doctors will be able to act on tumors that do not respond well to traditional treatment, and to apply the most modern high-tech methods in oncology. We will systematically move towards preclinical and clinical trials, ”said Valery Falkov.

The Ministry of Health and its industry research institutes are taking part in the development of boron neutron capture therapy. Scientists of the Russian Academy of Sciences carry out chemical and biological research in this area. A contribution to the development of the new technology is made by the N.N. N.N.Blokhin.

Institute of Nuclear Physics GI Budker SB RAS is developing modern accelerators, intense sources of synchrotron radiation and free electron lasers. Here, the equipment is being created, which will be equipped with the Center for Collective Use “Siberian Ring Photon Source” – one of the largest domestic installations “Megascience”.

The Institute develops advanced scientific equipment for domestic and foreign research projects, such as the accelerator complex NICA, KISI-Kurchatov, Large Hadron Collider (CERN) and others.
