Plasma transfusion is one of the most effective treatments for COVID-19.

For a year and a half, 25.5 thousand Muscovites have become plasma donors. It can be taken after an illness or vaccination against a coronavirus infection. I wrote about this in my account on the social network. “In contact with” Sergei Sobyanin.

Transfusion of donated COVREC blood plasma (plasma with antibodies to new coronavirus infection) is one of the most effective treatments for COVID-19. The results of studies of Moscow doctors indicate that the introduction of donor plasma increases the survival rate of patients with severe disease by 19 percent and significantly reduces the need to transfer people to a ventilator.

Plasma donors can be citizens who have had a new coronavirus infection, have developed immunity to this disease and have no contraindications to donating blood and its components.

Since June 2021, citizens who have been vaccinated with Sputnik V can also donate plasma for patients with coronavirus. During a recent study, Moscow clinicians found that in the plasma of those vaccinated, a high titer of neutralizing antibodies is found 70 percent more often than in those who have been ill.

The Moscow government will double the capacity of the plasma donor hotline, which is used to treat patients with COVID-19. For these purposes, 16.7 million rubles will be allocated from the city budget.

Those wishing to become donors can call: +7 (495) 870-45-16. The hotline was opened on April 9, 2020, on the day of the start of the “Donors of Hope” project.

Operators advise potential donors and conduct an initial survey. In case of successful completion of the questionnaire, they are recorded in one of eight blood transfusion departments. Further, by the decision of the transfusiologist, potential donors are sent for an extended analysis or immediately for donation.

For a year and a half of operation, the hotline operators have processed more than one million 20 thousand calls.

Plasma donors were 25,591 Muscovites, of whom 4,678 people donated plasma more than once. 19 354 liters of plasma were prepared, 17 337 transfusions were carried out.

From 09:00 to 19:00 daily from 16 to 120 employees work on the hotline. The number of operators is determined based on the volume of incoming calls traffic.

The modernization of the hotline will increase the volume of plasma blanks. This type of treatment will become more affordable for COVID-19 patients.
