In a number of institutions of the GUFSIN of Russia in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, biometric scanners are installed, the principle of which is based on the technology of scanning the veins of the palm in infrared light: hemoglobin in the blood absorbs part of the infrared waves, and the unique pattern of the saphenous veins appears on the scanned reflection in the form of a pattern of dark lines.
The technology is absolutely safe for health, which is confirmed by the medical conclusion of the Research Institute of Occupational Medicine. The terminal has a unique algorithm that recognizes a person in less than two seconds and gives a low error rate.
The applied method of recognition by the veins of the palm, in contrast to identification by the papillary pattern, is insensitive to damage to the skin. The reader recognizes a person by a hand with cuts, calluses, burns, or strips of plaster.
– The key advantage of biometric systems based on palm vein scanners is the highest level of data security. The pattern of the veins of the palms is more complex than a fingerprint, which increases the accuracy of identification and reduces the risk of unauthorized persons being allowed into the restricted area. The saphenous vein network is not visible in the optical spectrum, so it is impossible to deceive the device using a photo or a dummy, ” said Sergey Bychkov, head of the regime and supervision department of the GUFSIN.
In the penitentiary institutions of the GUFSIN, advanced methods of personality recognition have been successfully applied for several years. A person is identified by biometric parameters of the face or papillary patterns of the fingers.
The system of electronic registration by biometric parameters of fingers, which completely eliminates the human factor when checking the presence of convicts and substituting one person for another, has been used in the institutions of the GUFSIN for more than 10 years.
