The first migratory birds have already begun to leave the capital. And the animals stock up on food and look for winter dwellings.

The inhabitants of the natural areas of the capital are gradually beginning to prepare for the cold weather. About the approach of autumn, they are prompted by a reduction in daylight hours and a decrease in air temperature, experts say Mosprirody.

Preparing for the flight

Although the parks are still green and warm enough, the first birds have already begun to fly away to warmer regions. Some birds fly very far, so they hit the road at the end of summer. Swifts, warblers and crickets go on the journey first. Black swifts, for example, winter in southern Africa – they have to overcome more than nine thousand kilometers.

These birds are insectivorous – as the temperature falls, food for them becomes less and less, so they leave Moscow before anyone else. Granivorous birds such as buntings will fly away a little later. Winter is ahead, and you can’t get grains from under the snow. Before leaving, many birds huddle in flocks: together it is easier for them to find food and easier to defend themselves from predators. This is the behavior of starlings, which wander in flocks towards the south.

Waterfowl are usually in a hurry least of all – before a long journey, they need to train their offspring well to fly and swim. During the flight, they will adhere to bodies of water and rest on them.

Delicious blanks

Animals that do not hibernate are now actively stocking up on food for the cold season. Among them, for example, murine rodents and squirrels. And those who will sleep all winter eat heavily, accumulate subcutaneous fat and look for dwellings. So do hedgehogs, hazel dormouse and badgers.

Mospriroda experts ask the residents of Moscow not to feed the animals at this time. It is best to simply not distract them and give them the opportunity to get their own food. Feeding birds early can delay them on their way to warmer countries – the flight will become difficult and dangerous. And animals can lose the skill of finding food. Experts advise feeding birds only at low air temperatures and constant snow cover.
