Sakhalin Yunarmeys took part in a solemn event dedicated to the 117th anniversary of the collapse of the legendary cruiser Novik.

The event began with a divine liturgy for the dead sailors, which was conducted by Archpriest Alexander of the Holy Protection Monastery.

Through the fate of the legendary Novik, the younger generation has the opportunity to learn about the events of the Russo-Japanese War. In August 1904, Novik anchored off the coast of southern Sakhalin to replenish coal and food supplies.

The work was already drawing to a close when the radio operator heard the negotiations of the Japanese ships on the air. The ship went out to meet the enemy and a battle ensued, as a result of which the Russian “Novik” disabled the Japanese cruiser “Tsushima”, but he himself was forced to return to the waters of the Korsakov post, as he received serious damage.

It was impossible to fight with an inoperative steering system, and it was also impossible to repair one of the holes. In this situation, the Russian sailors decided to remove the weapons from the cruiser, reinforcing the ground defense of the port of Korsakov, and flood the ship itself so that the enemy would not get it. In the future, part of the ship’s crew remained on Sakhalin and continued to participate in the battles with the Japanese landing party.

The commemorative event was attended by servicemen, representatives of the Council of Veterans, the ataman of the district Cossack society, pupils of the military-patriotic club “Cossack Outpost”, youth soldiers, as well as residents and guests of the port city.
