The underwater technical group of the complex expedition of the Northern Fleet and the 12th Main Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defense, conducted with the participation of the Russian Geographical Society, within the framework of the historical and cultural project “The Main Facade of Russia. History, Events, People ”discovered an underwater object in the Novaya Zemlya region, which will help to reveal the secrets of the first years of the development of the archipelago.

During the work in the Yenisei Bay, an underwater object up to 10 meters long was discovered by side-scan sonar at a depth of 8 meters from the BL-820 boat under the control of Captain 2nd Rank Ivan Okatov. Deciphering and analysis of the obtained materials allow us to assert that a wooden ship was found. Weather conditions did not allow for a more thorough survey of the object. In the near future, work on the discovered object, which may turn out to be the Yenisei vessel, which provided the work of the expedition of Pyotr Pakhtusov and disappeared in 1832, will continue.

The underwater technical group, which includes specialists working with standard modern hydroacoustic, video and robotics, began to study promising search areas on August 15, 2021. In these areas, from the point of view of military researchers, the most likely finding of sunken ships, both from the Pomor period and of a later period. The group carries out research on the BL-820 boat of the 12th Main Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defense. Rescue and diving support of the search is assigned to the rescue and tugboat Zvezdochka of the Northern Fleet.

During the work, the areas in the Mityushikha and Serebryanka bays, in the Yenisei Bay and the Krotov Strait were explored. The definition of the districts was preceded by extensive work with archival materials and primary sources. The work technology aimed at preserving cultural heritage sites provides for the search for historical sites, their identification and visual inspection. If the historical significance is confirmed, it is possible for divers to descend to the facility to dismantle especially valuable items.

At present, the underwater technical team is on board the rescue tugboat Zvezdochka to Gribovaya Bay, where they will examine the areas of possible death of Pomor vessels in the 17th-19th centuries.
