The initiative to perpetuate the memory of the defenders of Moscow came from the community of the descendants of the militia of the 13th Rostokin division.

A monument to the heroes of the 13th Rostokinsky division of the people’s militia “Shoulder to shoulder” was erected in the Aqueduct park. Sergei Sobyaninlaid flowers at the new monument. The initiative to perpetuate the memory of the defenders of Moscow came from the community of the descendants of the militia of the 13th Rostokin division.

“This year is special in general – the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Moscow. And the opening of the monument is, of course, a significant event. Of the 12 thousand militias of this Rostokinsk division, those who were called up, about a thousand returned, in my opinion, ”the Moscow Mayor said.

The monument to the heroes of the 13th Rostokinsky division of the people’s militia “Shoulder to shoulder” was opened in a solemn atmosphere. This event has been awaited for many years, said Artem Popov, coordinator of the community of relatives of the militiamen of the 13th Rostokin division.

“All approvals were made in a very short time. And the sculptors, we believe, are a work of art as a result. These traditions of preserving the memory of the Rostokin division in the North-Eastern Administrative District have been supported for many years. This is very important for us, ”he said.

In accordance with the decree of the military council of the Moscow military district of July 2, 1941 “On the voluntary mobilization of workers in Moscow and the Moscow region in the division of the people’s militia,” the division of the people’s militia was formed in the then Rostokinsky district of the capital. Now on this territory are the districts of Alekseevsky, Ostankinsky, Rostokino, Marfino and part of Meshchansky.

The division was formed at the Bauman tram depot, at the plants “Resora”, “Kalibr”, “Vodopribor”, “Mekhkombinat”, in such educational institutions as VGIK, Financial Institute, school number 270 (now – school number 1539 at the address: Malomoskovskaya street, house 7), school number 287 (now – school number 1531 at the address: Godovikova street, building 16a). They were enrolled in the ranks of the militias in the people’s commissariats of trade, agriculture and the textile industry, at the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition, in the F.E. Dzerzhinsky (now – Ostankino park), printing house of Goznak and other enterprises.

About 12 thousand Muscovites enrolled in the 13th division, mostly people of non-conscription age – often under 17 and over 50 years old. Less than a thousand of them returned home from the front.

Shoulder to shoulder

The Shoulder to Shoulder Monument was created in 2021 by Vahe and Mikael Sogoyan. The sculptors scrupulously studied numerous archival materials, including documents, letters and notes about the formation of the division, the places of battles and their historical significance. The artistic design resulted in the images of two militias of different generations. The total height of the building is 4.2 meters, of which 3.3 meters is a sculptural composition made in bronze.

Galina Nikulina, the granddaughter of a militia member of the 13th Rostokinsky Division, expressed her gratitude to the city for the work on perpetuating the memory of the soldiers.

“This monument is very expensive. Now we can all come here, because our soldiers, whom we call missing, without graves, now have a monument. You can bow to him and honor their memory, ”added Galina Nikulina.

The installation of the monument in the Aqueduct Park is symbolic. In this place, a stele already rises in honor of the 400th anniversary of the liberation of Moscow by the militia of Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky.

The opening of the monument was preceded by the improvement of the park. The historic Rostokinsky aqueduct was washed and painted here, sandblasting and painting of the pedestrian bridge across the Yauza were carried out. In the park, the tiled surface of the paths was repaired, the side stone on the stairs leading to the monument, and the steps at the pedestal of the stele were replaced.

In addition, 28 benches and five lighting poles with lamps for architectural and artistic illumination of the sculptural composition were installed. The author’s granite paving was carried out in the area around the monument. We also laid a rolled lawn. It is planned to plant 13 lindens in the park this fall.
