On September 9, in St. Petersburg at the Sredne-Nevsky shipyard (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation), the laying ceremony of the newest mine defense ship Afanasy Ivannikov of Project 12700 Alexandrite for the Navy will take place.
The ceremony will be held under the leadership of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov. The ship-laying ceremony will be attended by the heads of the United Shipbuilding Corporation, the Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard, the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau, representatives of the St. Petersburg administration, veterans and shipbuilders.
The day before, the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, heard reports from the chiefs of the specialized bodies of the military command of the Main Command of the Navy on the readiness for laying the mine defense ship Afanasy Ivannikov on September 9th.
“The PMO ship Afanasy Ivannikov will be built to equip the mine-sweeping forces of the Navy as part of the serial construction of ships of this project, deployed at the Sredne-Nevsky shipyard. The ships of Project 12700 have proven their effectiveness in practice and have a number of unique characteristics, ”the commander-in-chief said.
Project 12700 Alexandrite was developed by the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation). These ships belong to a new generation of mine-sweeping forces and are designed to combat sea mines, which the new PMO ships can detect both in the water of sea areas and in sea soil, without entering the danger zone. To combat mines, ships can use various types of trawls, as well as remote-controlled and autonomous unmanned underwater vehicles.
During the construction of these ships at the Sredne-Nevsky shipyard, the latest Russian technologies are used, which have no analogues in the world shipbuilding. The ships of this project have a unique, largest in the world hull made of monolithic fiberglass, formed by the method of vacuum infusion. Compared to metal, the weight of the composite body is 20 percent lower. It has high strength, is not susceptible to aggressive chemical environments and corrosion, and the service life, subject to operating standards, is unlimited. Other advantages of the composite hull include its “non-magnetic”, which ensures greater survivability of the ship when searching for mines.
According to the plans of the Main Command of the Russian Navy, the ships of the new generation of PMO in the short term will form the basis of the mine-sweeping forces of the fleets of the Russian Navy, significantly increasing the efficiency of mission performance.
Mine defense ships of project 12700 “Alexandrite”:
Displacement – about 890 tons;
Length – about 62 m;
Width – about 10 m;
Full speed – about 16 knots;
Crew – about 44 people.
JSC “Sredne-Nevsky Shipbuilding Plant” is the leader of composite shipbuilding in Russia and the only enterprise in the country that has mastered the construction of ships and vessels from 4 types of materials: composite materials, shipbuilding, low-magnetic steel, aluminum-magnesium alloys. The enterprise has mastered the modern technology of manufacturing structures from composite materials using the vacuum infusion method. For more than 100 years of operation, the Sredne-Nevsky shipyard has built more than 500 ships and vessels, of which more than 200 units are sea and road minesweepers of various projects, including those exported to 13 countries of the world. Since 1937, the plant has essentially been a monopoly in the construction of domestic mine defense ships.
United Shipbuilding Corporation JSC is the largest shipbuilding company in Russia. It was created in accordance with the decree of the President of the Russian Federation in 2007 with 100% of the shares in federal ownership. The holding includes about 40 enterprises and organizations of the industry (major shipbuilding and ship repair yards, leading design bureaus). At present, most of the domestic shipbuilding complex has been consolidated on the basis of USC. The Russian market is the main one for the state corporation, which also exports its products to 20 countries of the world.
