Everyone will be able to listen to lectures by leading researchers of the writer’s work, visit his favorite places in the city and take part in quizzes.
By the end of this year, almost 180 events will be held in the capital, timed to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the birth of Fyodor Dostoevsky. It will be celebrated on November 11th. As told Natalia Sergunina, Deputy Mayor of Moscow, cultural venues invite everyone to listen to lectures by leading researchers of the writer’s work, visit his favorite places in the city and take part in quizzes.
“Events dedicated to the anniversary of Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky have been taking place in the capital since January. They are conducted online and offline. The main part of the program is scheduled for autumn. In total, by the end of the year, Muscovites and guests of the city will have another 179 thematic events – lectures, public currents, excursions, exhibitions and film screenings, ”noted Natalya Sergunina.
All face-to-face events are held in compliance with the necessary sanitary measures. Visitors need to wear masks and maintain social distancing.

Fyodor Mikhailovich was the artist’s favorite writer. In his paintings, he embodied plots from the novels and stories of Dostoevsky. According to the organizers of the exhibition, Ilya Glazunov found a certain artistic method that allowed him to most accurately reveal the atmosphere of each work and the author’s intention.
The series of lectures “The Secret Pages of Dostoevsky” opens on September 18 in the library № 180 named after N.F. Fedorov. Beginning at 17:00. Together with the researcher of the writer’s work Anastasia Gacheva, the audience will learn how his novels were created and what role the classic’s notebooks and letters played in this.
On the same day, the library will host a seminar “How to read Dostoevsky?” Researchers of his work Tatyana Kasatkina, Pavel Fokin, Boris Tikhomirov and Alexander Krinitsyn will consider such works as Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, Demons, Teenager and The Brothers Karamazov. The seminar will be held jointly with the Commission for the Study of Dostoevsky’s Creativity at the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) in partnership with the Dostoevsky and World Culture Research Center at the A.M. Gorky RAS.
On September 24-26, the Moscow FEST Regional Studies Forum will take place. It will be held by the capital’s libraries. The forum will be dedicated to the period of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s life associated with Moscow, where the classic was born and raised until the age of 16. So, in the library named after F.M. Dostoevsky will host an open family evening: everyone will take part in a quiz, read excerpts from works and try to write a letter with a quill pen. Children will visit a comic book drawing workshop and get acquainted with the Children’s Dostoevsky coloring guide. Guests will also be offered to try the Khotyintsevs pie – a favorite dish in the writer’s family.
One of the most notable events in October – the DostoFest project – will take place in the library № 18 named after V.А. Zhukovsky. On October 6, it will be possible to go on a guided trip to the memorable places of Fyodor Mikhailovich in Moscow. The program also includes quizzes and the opening of a film lecture hall, where they will first watch and then discuss screen versions of his works.
Early stories and childhood
From October 1 to November 1, the ZIL Cultural Center organizes a book exhibition “F.M. Dostoevsky and Research on His Work. ” The exhibition will include famous works, letters and early stories of Dostoevsky, as well as the works of leading researchers of his work.
Library-reading room named after A.S. Pushkin on November 9 will hold a virtual tour “Moscow of Dostoevsky”. Beginning at 15:00. Listeners will learn about the classic’s father, who worked in a hospital for the poor on the outskirts of Moscow, about how the writer worked on the novel Crime and Punishment at his sister’s dacha in Lublin. In addition, the lecturer will tell you where the wing where Dostoevsky spent his childhood years and how life went in the merchant districts of Kitay-gorod and Zamoskvorechye is located. The host of the program is Maria Galkina, Candidate of Philology, an employee of the Department of Memorial Work of the Library.
November 15 in the library-reading room named after I.S. Turgenev will open the 7th large music and literary festival “Richter Meetings”. It will take place online and offline. This annual event brings together different genres and types of art – music, literature, film and painting. This year’s program is dedicated to the anniversaries of prominent writers and composers – Fyodor Dostoevsky (200 years old), Mikhail Bulgakov (130 years old), Franz Liszt (210 years old) and Sergei Taneyev (165 years old). Concerts, exhibitions, lectures, film screenings and creative meetings have been prepared for the audience at more than 20 venues: in libraries, museums, theaters, educational institutions of a musical and artistic profile.
