All military units of the St. Petersburg garrison held commemorative events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the blockade of Leningrad. On this day 80 years ago, the fascist German troops of Army Group North captured Shlisselburg (Petrokrepost). From that moment on, an almost 900-day siege of the city began.

Commemorative events were also held at the Piskarevskoye Memorial Cemetery, where a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the memorial to the Fallen Defenders of Leningrad.

On behalf of the command of the Western Military District (ZVO), a wreath was laid by the deputy commander of the troops, Lieutenant-General Vladimir Kochetkov. The ceremony was also attended by officers of the Western Military District headquarters, representatives of state and local authorities, public organizations, blockade veterans and residents of the city.
