The spatial scope of the exercise is more than two thousand kilometers – from the Baltic Sea in the Kaliningrad region to training grounds in the Voronezh and Nizhny Novgorod regions.
Practical actions of troops (forces) started simultaneously at nine training grounds – Kirilovsky, Strugi Krasnye, Mulino, Pogonovo, Khmelevka, Pravdinsky, Dobrovolsky, Dorogobuzh and Volsky, located on the territory of the Russian Federation, in the Baltic Sea, as well as at five test sites in the Republic of Belarus – Obuz-Lesnovsky, Brestsky, Chepelevo, Domanovsky and Ruzhansky.
The joint strategic exercise Zapad-2021 involves about 200,000 servicemen, over 80 aircraft and helicopters, up to 760 units of military equipment, including over 290 tanks, over 240 guns, multiple launch rocket systems and mortars, as well as up to 15 ships.
Of these, 12,800 people were involved in the exercise on the territory of the Republic of Belarus, including up to 2,500 Russian military personnel, more than 30 aircraft and helicopters, up to 350 units of military equipment, including about 140 tanks, up to 110 guns, multiple launch rocket systems and mortars.
About 2 thousand servicemen are taking part in the West-2021 exercise from the member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and other friendly countries as part of the created coalition group of forces.
At the same time, the maximum number of personnel of military units involved in training under a single operational command falling under the Vienna Document 2011 on Confidence and Security Building Measures on the territory of the Russian Federation will not exceed 6,400, respectively.
The objectives of the exercise are – to check the level of readiness and ability of the military command and control bodies of the troops (forces) of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation for joint actions in solving problems of ensuring military security and territorial integrity of the Union State, their interaction during the conduct of hostilities; obtaining practice by commanders, commanders and staffs in managing troops (forces) in the course of joint actions to repel aggression against the Union State.
A joint strategic exercise of the armed forces of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus is held every two years in accordance with the decision adopted by the heads of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus. The Zapad-2021 exercise is the final stage in the joint training of the armed forces of the two states this year.
