The HPP-2 building has been awarded the status of a cultural heritage site of regional significance and will house exhibition halls, educational classes, a library, a bookstore, a cafe, a restaurant and an assembly hall with 420 seats.

The project to revive the historic building of the decommissioned HPP-2 on Balchug Island is almost complete. According to Sergei Sobyanin, a unique cultural space, modestly called the House of Culture “GES-2”, is a huge gift to Moscow for the City Day.

“This level and universality of space in the world or not, or very few of them. We also tried to create space around the renovated HPP-2 – we reconstructed the Patriarshy Bridge, the embankment, and replaced communications. In general, this large public space will undoubtedly be a decoration of the city and, of course, will please Muscovites and guests of the capital, ”said the Moscow Mayor during his tour of the future House of Culture.

He added that initially he himself did not really believe that everything would work out, realizing how difficult and painstaking work it was. “And not all investors cope with their desires and ideas. But both the architects and those involved in the content program have coped with this task. Now, of course, the main thing is to fill this space with life in the coming months. And this work has already begun, thank you very much, ”said Sergei Sobyanin.

The central power station of the city tram (later – HPP-2 “Mosenergo”) was built in 1904-1908 according to the project of the architect Vasily Bashkirov at the Maly Kamenny Bridge on the bank of the Vodootvodny Canal.

In his work, Vasily Bashkirov often turned to the motives of the neo-Russian style, elements of which he also used in the processing of the facades of the power plant. A unique feature of the building was the glass roof, designed by engineer Nikolai Sushkin with the direct participation of Vladimir Shukhov.

The power plant complex remained in its original form until the end of the 1920s. Then, throughout the 20th century, the station’s appearance underwent repeated changes, new buildings, technological rooms were added, the decorative design of the facades and the pointed end of the clock tower were lost.

Sergei Sobyanin thanked the specialists who were involved in the restoration of the complex: “Thank you for the solutions that you came up with during the restoration and reconstruction of this space. You have breathed in both the modern vision and the adaptation of the unique structure and preserved all the valuable historical elements. Moreover, they restored a significant part of the already lost cultural objects that were here. “

Birch grove and bakery

The decision to decommission HPP-2 was made in 2006. The reasons were the deterioration of the equipment and the high cost of the energy produced. In addition, the closure of the station has improved the environmental situation in the city center.

The electrical load of the closed station was redistributed to the Bersenevskaya substation built nearby, and the heat load to CHPP-20.

In November 2009, the HPP-2 building was given the status of a cultural heritage site of regional significance.

Five years later, Mosenergo sold the property complex of GES-2 to an investor to create the GES-2 House of Culture.

The customer for the creation of the House of Culture was the Foundation for the Development of Contemporary Culture “Victoria – the Art of Being Contemporary” (V-A-C), founded by Leonid Mikhelson. The investor thanked Sergei Sobyanin and city services for their cooperation. “This is not just a reconstructed building, it is a whole site. We are grateful to the huge number of contractors and design organizations that participated in this. Somehow everyone was on fire with the idea of making something unique. In my opinion, we have something to be proud of. I am sure that this will be one of the favorite venues of Muscovites, and we will make every effort to make this happen, ”said Leonid Mikhelson.

In addition to the restoration of the historic building of HPP-2, the project includes the creation of a high-quality urban environment: the reconstruction of the Patriarch’s pedestrian bridge, the improvement of part of the Bolotnaya embankment and the organization of a new descent to the river.

The architectural concept of the House of Culture “GES-2” was developed by the international architectural bureau RenzoPiano Building Workshop under the leadership of the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano, author of the Pompidou Center in Paris, as well as other important cultural institutions in different countries. “It was a power plant that produced energy, and now it is producing ideas in the service of Muscovites,” said co-author Antonio Belvedere.

The restoration of HPP-2 is an excellent example of international cultural cooperation.

The total area of the four-storey complex with underground parking is over 35 thousand square meters. It houses exhibition halls, educational classes, a library, a bookstore, a cafe, a restaurant and an assembly hall with 420 seats.

The central element of the complex is the building of HPP-2 with an area of about 16 thousand square meters. During the restoration of the former power plant, they returned to their original appearance: they cleared of late layers and extensions, and recreated the most expressive element of the building – the clock tower. Just like 100 years ago, the glass roof floods the building with sunlight. In addition, solar panels were installed on the roof, which will provide up to 10 percent of the energy required to operate the HPP-2 building.

The pipes of HPP-2, 70 meters high, are used for air intake and purification. The building has a rainwater collection and purification system. The collected water can be used in toilets and to irrigate plants.

HPP-2 claims to receive a gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certificate and is included in the rating system of environmentally friendly and sustainable buildings.

Art residences and an assembly hall for theatrical performances and concerts, plays and performances, film screenings and other events have become part of the new space.

Acoustics at HPP-2 was carried out by a group of international specialists, some of whom created the sound system of the Paris Philharmonic.

A storage area of 2.8 thousand square meters is provided for the collections of the fund.

Part of the former power plant, the detached building “Vault”, is set aside for the center of art production. The building with an area of almost two thousand square meters with vaulted ceilings on two floors (one at ground level, the other underground) once housed the workshop of the P.A. Smirnov.

The Svody Art Production Center aims to support the creative ecosystem of the Russian capital by providing access to modern equipment for the implementation of their projects. The activities of “Svod” are conceived as parallel to the artistic program of the House of Culture “GES-2”. Here you can experiment with materials – wood, metal, plastic, ceramics and textiles, create projects in photo, audio and video studios, a 3D printing laboratory, a silk screen printing studio, a finishing workshop, use a library of materials and actively interact with other participants in the coworking space …

A birch grove was planted on the roof of the underground parking, harmoniously fitting into the common space.

The main emphasis in the work of the future House of Culture “GES-2” will be placed on the development and awakening of interest in contemporary culture.

The new cultural space is designed to be visited by up to 750 thousand people a year. Thanks to him, about 800 new jobs will be created.

Pedestrian bridge and descent to the water

A new pedestrian zone from the Cathedral of Christ the Savior to Yakimanskaya embankment has become an organic continuation of the museum and educational complex of GES-2.

Reconstruction of the Patriarchal pedestrian bridge on the section between Bersenevskaya and Yakimanskaya embankments with the installation of cantilever stands (amphitheaters), staircases and lifts for people with limited mobility.

Small social and cultural centers with a total area of 5.7 thousand square meters were placed under the bridge.

On the section of the Bolotnaya embankment, adjacent to the Patriarshy Bridge, landscaping was carried out and a descent to the water was made for rest and walks.

The public space around HPP-2 will become one of the main points of attraction on the pedestrian route along the Moskva River embankments, the creation of which is one of the main goals of the city improvement program.

In recent years, Prechistenskaya, Kremlin, Moskvoretskaya, Bersenevskaya, Yakimanskaya, Ovchinnikovskaya, Ozerkovskaya and a number of other embankments in the center of the capital have been put in order. In addition, the Zaryadye park was created, Bolshoi Moskvoretsky and Bolshoi Kamenny bridges were repaired.

This year, the complex improvement of Balchug Island with a total area of over 35 hectares was completed, including Sadovnicheskaya, Sofiyskaya, Raushskaya and Kosmodamianskaya embankments, adjacent Sadovnicheskaya streets, 1st and 2nd Raushskaya, Faleevsky, Komissariatsky and Sadovnichesky lanes and Repinsky square (Bolotnaya square).
