Air defense units of the Aerospace Forces and the Western Military District, equipped with S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems, as well as Pantsir-S anti-aircraft missile and cannon systems, were transferred to new positions at the Ashuluk training ground in the Astrakhan region as part of a joint strategic exercise of the armed forces Of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus “West-2021”.

Subdivisions of anti-aircraft missile and radio-technical troops of the Western Military District to build up the radar field in missile-hazardous areas, as well as to strengthen the forces and means of air defense of the protected area, made many kilometers of marches from places of permanent deployment to new positional areas.

Combat crews of RTV and S-400 air defense systems, upon arrival at new positions, will begin deployment, maintenance of equipment and take up combat duty.

In the course of the exercise, the tasks of repelling a massive missile and air strike of a simulated enemy will be worked out. Formations and military units of aviation and air defense will work out the destruction of various targets imitating cruise missiles, strike and reconnaissance drones, and aircraft of a conditional enemy.

When combat crews detect unidentified air targets for their classification or conditional use of weapons of destruction, fighter aviation forces on duty for air defense will rise into the air.

The joint strategic exercise (SSU) of the armed forces of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus is held every two years in accordance with the decision made by the heads of the two states.

Exercise “West-2021” is the final stage of joint training of the armed forces of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation this year.

Practical actions of troops (forces) take place from 10 to 16 September 2021 at nine training grounds located on the territory of the Russian Federation, in the waters of the Baltic Sea, as well as at five training grounds of the armed forces of the Republic of Belarus.

In total, up to 200 thousand personnel, about 80 aircraft and helicopters, up to 760 units of military equipment, including 290 tanks, 240 guns, multiple launch rocket systems, take part in the SSU “West-2021” on the territory of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus and mortars, as well as up to 15 ships.

The maximum number of personnel of military units involved in training, subject to the Vienna Document 2011, on the territory of the Russian Federation does not exceed 6400 military personnel.

The return of military command and control bodies and troops to the points of permanent deployment after participation in the exercise is planned until mid-October of this year.
