On September 8, the circle of the blockade of Leningrad closed. A concert prepared by the staff of the fundamental library of the academy and the musicians of the military orchestra of the academy was dedicated to the memory of Leningraders, doctors and military musicians of the besieged Leningrad.

On this day, a commemorative event dedicated to the beginning of the siege of Leningrad was held in the academy club. The staff of the fundamental library and the military orchestra of the academy prepared a musical and poetic composition “Medical Symphony of War”, dedicated to the memory of the staff and cadets of the Military Medical Academy. SM Kirov, who lived and worked in Leningrad during the blockade, as well as those doctors and nurses of the Academy who gave their lives at the front.

The deputy head of the academy for military-political work, Colonel of the Medical Service Vladimir Lyutov, addressing the freshmen who came to the event, emphasized that the blockade of Leningrad is one of the most tragic pages of the Great Patriotic War, and 900 heroic days and nights that the city spent in the enemy ring – an example of courage and stamina.

“The blockade of Leningrad has shown that the spirit of the Russian man cannot be broken. Our task is to preserve this memory, pass it on to descendants and make sure that history does not repeat itself, ”said Vladimir Lyutov.

The staff of the fundamental library took as a basis the memories of cadets, graduates and employees of the Academy, who talk about those terrible days, about the bombing of Leningrad, about the shifts of the library staff and readers on the roofs, attics, staircases, at collection points, about the evacuation of the Academy to Samarkand and about heroic preservation of the richest book collections of the Academy library in the occupied city. All materials for the literary part of the composition were found in the funds of the fundamental library of the Military Medical Academy.

The best military songs, musical compositions of the Great Patriotic War, the besieged city sounded that evening from the stage:

“Pre-war Waltz”, “Dugout”, “Medal” For the Defense of Leningrad “,” Ladoga “and even a fragment of Dmitry Shostakovich’s Leningrad Symphony were performed by the military orchestra of the Military Medical Academy. Another part of the program was devoted to the work of military bands in occupied Leningrad. During the war years, the hands of military musicians held shovels more often than musical instruments. The musicians of the Brass Bands were both orderlies and sappers, watched over the blackout, fought on rooftops with incendiary bombs. And on February 13, 1943, they dug the first trench at the Piskarevskoye cemetery.

For freshmen of the Military Medical Academy, who are just beginning a new stage in their life, the history of the blockade of Leningrad and the life of the Academy in those difficult years is important not only from the point of view of fostering patriotism, but also rethinking their capabilities and realizing their place in the history of the Great Country.

For reference:

In 1941, 2/3 of the personnel of the Military Medical Academy. CM. Kirov went to the front in the army, and the doctors and nurses who remained in Leningrad continued to work in clinics and hospitals, accepting the wounded and sick from the front line of the Leningrad front. The Academy evacuated to Samarkand graduated 1,800 doctors who completed an accelerated course of study in three years. Most of them went to the front, where every tenth graduate of the academy died.
