For the first time, the Pskov unit of the Russian Airborne Forces carried out the landing of more than 600 personnel and 30 units of military equipment at night as part of the joint strategic Russian-Belarusian exercises “West-2021”.

“At the Strugi Krasnye training ground in the Pskov region, for the first time at night, a mass landing of more than 600 personnel in full gear, with weapons and equipment, and 30 BMD-2K-AU, BMD-4M and armored personnel carriers were carried out,” to journalists on Sunday at the RF Ministry of Defense.

The coordination of the actions of the airborne units was carried out using modern navigation systems and night vision devices. After the gathering of personnel and the mooring of the landed military equipment, the paratroopers seized the field airfield and destroyed the mock enemy with the support of artillery and air defense systems.

More than 20 Il-76 military transport aircraft were involved in the landing near Pskov, which simultaneously carried airborne units from heights of 600 to 4,000 meters to two landing sites. Air cover was carried out by the crews of the Su-30SM fighters and the Mi-8AMTSh and Ka-50 army helicopters, and the air formation of the VTA aircraft was controlled from the A-50U and Il-22-SURT long-range radar aircraft.

Strategic exercises of the Armed Forces of Russia and Belarus are held every two years. West 2021 is the final stage of joint training of the armed forces of the two countries this year. Practical actions of troops (forces) will take place from 10 to 16 September at nine training ranges located in Russia, in the Baltic Sea, as well as at five training grounds of the Armed Forces of Belarus.

In total, up to 200 thousand personnel, about 80 aircraft and helicopters, up to 760 units of military equipment, including 290 tanks, 240 guns, multiple launch rocket systems and mortars, as well as up to 15 ships will take part in the exercises.

The maximum number of personnel of military units involved in the exercise, falling under the Vienna Document 2011, on the territory of Russia does not exceed 6,400 military personnel.

The return of military command and control bodies and troops to their permanent deployment points after participation in the exercises is scheduled until mid-October.
