At the same time, bilateral battalion tactical exercises were launched at four training ranges of the Southern Military District (YuVO), which will last for a week.

Eight battalion tactical groups from the combined-arms formations of the Southern Military District will work out the so-called innovations in the combat use of troops at the combined-arms training grounds of the Volgograd Region, Karachay-Cherkessia, the Chechen Republic and at a military base in the Republic of South Ossetia.

More than 6 thousand servicemen take part in the exercises, about 800 pieces of weapons and equipment are involved, including tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, artillery pieces and multiple launch rocket systems. For the purpose of interspecific interaction, more than 40 aircraft and helicopters of army and operational-tactical aviation have been attracted from the association of the Air Force and Air Defense of the Southern Military District.

Within the framework of the exercises, the units will for the first time work out new methods of tactical actions as part of various types of reconnaissance-fire and strike systems, including counter-battery, aviation and sniper systems. In the interests of the commanders of battalion tactical groups, mobile tactical groups designed to combat unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as tactical aerosol countermeasures and tactical breakthrough teams, will operate. When assessing each of the sides of the exercise, the inspectors will pay special attention to the ability of motorized rifle units to operate on helicopters and the ability of battalion commanders to use the capabilities of aviation fire support.

The next stage of bilateral tactical exercises in the troops of the Southern Military District will end on September 18 this year. Based on the results of the exercises, an assessment will be given to subunits and personally to each serviceman from an ordinary rifleman to the commander of a battalion tactical group.
