In the mountains of the Caucasian ridge in Karachay-Cherkessia, sappers of the mountain formation of the 49th combined-arms army of the Southern Military District (YuVO), as part of a battalion tactical exercise, will install and manage minefields.

Engineers will detonate explosives by fire and electrical methods and conduct engineering reconnaissance of the area.

Particular attention during the course will be paid to the detection of explosive objects in rock using the newest non-contact mine detector “Korshun”, the capabilities of which allow detecting explosive devices at a distance of up to 30 m, both in the ground and snow, and in various structures and behind obstacles.

In total, more than 200 sappers of the Southern Military District were involved in the exercise, about 10 units of special military equipment were involved.

This week, four bilateral battalion tactical exercises are being held in the Southern Military District at combined-arms training ranges located in the Volgograd Region, Karachay-Cherkessia, the Chechen Republic and at a military base in the Republic of South Ossetia. About 6 thousand servicemen take part in them, about 300 pieces of weapons and equipment are involved, including tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, artillery pieces and multiple launch rocket systems. For the purpose of interspecific interaction, more than 40 aircraft and helicopters of army and operational-tactical aviation have been attracted from the association of the Air Force and Air Defense of the Southern Military District.
