The next stage of demining of the sunken ship “Jean Jaures” in the water area of the Feodosiya Bay began on September 6. In just a week, a group of pyrotechnic divers made more than 50 descents. The total time spent under water was almost two days. In the course of the work, a thorough monitoring of the ship was carried out, as well as complex underwater technical work was carried out to access explosive objects and their safe lifting to the surface. All this was carried out at a depth of 18 meters. At the same time, the divers experienced a pressure equal to three atmospheres. For comparison, on the surface it is three times less. After the ascent, the ammunition was transported and destroyed in compliance with all safety measures by means of controlled detonation.

At the same time, more than 2000 cartridges and 1773 different caliber ammunition were destroyed. The explosion power exceeded one ton of TNT.

To carry out the operation, a consolidated detachment of the Russian Emergencies Ministry was formed. It includes a Special Marine Detachment of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergencies of Russia for the Republic of Crimea, a Specialized Detachment of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia for the city of Sevastopol, 4th fire and rescue squad of the Federal Fire Service for the Republic of Crimea, the GIMS Center, as well as the Feodosia ASO GKU RK “Crimea- Saved”. A total of 44 personnel, 7 units of special equipment and 7 watercraft.

This year, the work will last until October 15th.

Let us remind you that during the Great Patriotic War, off the coast of the Feodosia Bay, the cargo ship “Jean Jaures” was attacked by German aviation. On board were ammunition intended for the Kerch-Feodosia landing operation. Despite the fact that the ship received a huge amount of damage, the ship’s crew managed to carry out repair work and head for Feodosia. But a few days later, “Jean Jaures” was blown up by a magnetic mine. After a long struggle for the survivability of the ship, under endless enemy shelling, the crew decided to flood the ship.
