As part of an exercise with an Arctic expeditionary group to protect the Arctic island zone and the sea coast of the Russian Federation, the Northern Fleet’s naval strike group, consisting of the Pyotr Veliky heavy nuclear missile cruiser and the Marshal Ustinov missile cruiser, worked out the destruction of a simulated enemy amphibious assault force in the Barents Sea. The combat crews of the cruisers fired at a naval target position with their main missile systems “Granit” (TARKR “Peter the Great”) and “Vulkan” (RRC “Marshal Ustinov”).

According to the objective control data, the target, imitating a simulated enemy amphibious assault detachment, was successfully hit.

The rocket firing area was previously closed for civilian shipping and aviation flights by the forces of the Kola Flotilla of diverse forces.

Rocket firing was the final episode of the Northern Fleet cruisers’ exercise in the Barents Sea. After its fulfillment, the forces of the fleet operating at sea began to wind up and headed for permanent bases on the Kola Peninsula.

The exercise with the Arctic expeditionary group of the Northern Fleet is held in accordance with the training plan of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation under the leadership of the commander of the Northern Fleet and is the final stage in the implementation of a set of measures for operational and combat training of forces (troops) of the Northern Fleet this year.

The practical actions of the forces (troops) of the Northern Fleet are played out at the training grounds of the Murmansk region, in the waters of the Barents and Kara Seas, the Laptev Sea in the region of the New Siberian Islands, and the Franz Josef Land archipelago.

Up to 8 thousand servicemen, about 800 units of military and special equipment, including about 40 tanks, 460 armored combat vehicles, up to 240 guns, mortars and multiple launch rocket systems, about 120 aircraft, including unmanned, up to 50 ships and support vessels.
