The personnel of various units of the Russian military base in South Ossetia, within the framework of a bilateral tactical battalion exercise, used reconnaissance and fire contours (ROK) to combat the tanks of a simulated enemy. The targets were destroyed by artillery salvo fire at a distance of more than 4 thousand meters.
At the Dzartsem training ground in the mountainous terrain, the artillerymen fired salvo fire at targets from the 152-mm Akatsia self-propelled artillery guns and 120-mm Sani mortars according to coordinates received from the reconnaissance units.
In total, over 30 targets were hit, imitating the enemy’s heavy armored vehicles. After each volley, the artillery crews practiced an anti-fire maneuver, advancing to new positions.
As part of the ROK, in cooperation with artillery units, scouts, signalmen and military personnel of the base’s unmanned aerial vehicles were performing tasks as intended.
The coordinates of the detected targets were transmitted in real time from the drone and the Strelets control, reconnaissance and communications complexes to the command posts. In total, more than 60 standards for terrain reconnaissance were worked out in order to detect targets.
