The personnel of the platoon for the elimination of environmental damage in the Arctic have completed another season of collecting metal debris on the island of Kildin in the Barents Sea. Last year, the servicemen collected scrap metal in its eastern part, and this year they carried out work in the west of the island. They collected and grouped more than 360 tons of scrap metal for removal from Kildin.

Last year, the servicemen of the Kola Flotilla collected about 300 tons of metal debris left over from the Soviet period of the development of Kildin.

13 environmental platoon men, a truck and a wheel crane were brought to the island in early June and worked there for three months.

For the export of scrap metal to the mainland, like last year, KamAZ trucks of the autobatal of the Northern Fleet’s logistics system and the landing ships of the Kola Flotilla brigade of diverse forces are involved.

For reference:

Environmental clean-up of the Arctic is one of the priority tasks of the Northern Fleet’s logistics system, which is carried out annually in the summer-autumn period for several years. Large-scale work on Kildin Island was first started last summer. Previously, the cleaning of the island and the removal of garbage were one-off.

The main work to eliminate environmental damage in the Arctic was carried out by the Severomors on Kotelny Island in the Laptev Sea, where the Northern Clover military base of the Northern Fleet is located. Over the five years of operation, more than 3.5 thousand tons of metal waste was removed on the island, most of which were barrels of fuel and lubricants left there until the 90s of the last century.
