For reference:

On September 18, 2003, the Tu-160 crew flew over aircraft after replacing the fourth power plant. The flight program was completed in full. With a decrease in altitude, as a result of an unidentified effect, the airframe of the aircraft began to collapse, in addition, the Tu-160’s hydro and power supply systems failed.

In this critical situation, the guard Colonel Yuri Deyneko displayed the highest professionalism and self-control. Assessing the situation, he turned the Tu-160 away from the largest gas storage facility in Europe and the village of Stepnoye, located on the course of the flight.

The crew took measures to turn on the fire extinguishing system and restore control of the aircraft. However, these actions did not sleep the plane from death.

The transcript of the recordings of the crew’s conversations showed that the commander of the ship made the only correct decision in a particular emergency.

The commander of the Tu-160 crew, Yuri Deyneko, was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Russia, the crew members – Oleg Fedusenko, Grigory Kolchin and Sergei Sukhorukov were awarded the Orders of Courage.
