The International Military Sports Council Boxing World Championship kicked off in Patriot Park on Saturday.
The opening of the championship was attended by the President of the International Council of Military Sports, Colonel Herve Piccerillo (France) and the President of the International Boxing Association Umar Kremlev. The 58th championship was started by the State Secretary – Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Nikolai Pankov, who read out a greeting from the head of the military department Sergei Shoigu.
In his address, the minister noted that Russia has deservedly become the host of an event of such a high level. “We have strong traditions of army sports, extensive experience in organizing representative international competitions, the necessary modern infrastructure and, of course, millions of ardent fans of this kind of martial arts. And what is especially important – the Russian team will be able to compete in the world championship under the national flag and anthem, ”Shoigu stressed, expressing confidence that the competition will be held in a fair fight, will contribute to the development of trust between countries and the strengthening of military cooperation.
The Ministry of Defense clarified that the preliminary fights and semi-finals of the tournament will be held at the CSKA Igrovoy sports complex from September 19 to 24, and the final fights will take place at the Lev Yashin VTB Arena on September 25. The tournament will feature awards in 15 weight categories. In total, over 230 boxers from 36 countries will compete at the championship. In just seven days of the competition, the participants of the 58th World Boxing Championship among military personnel in Moscow will hold 216 fights. Winners and prize-winners in all weight categories among men and women will be announced on September 25th.
The last boxing world championship of the International Military Sports Council was held in the Republic of Kazakhstan in 2014.
