The crew of the large landing ship “Kondopoga” removed the first batch of scrap metal from Kildin Island, collected by military ecologists of the Kola Flotilla of diverse forces during the summer season.

The personnel of the platoon for the elimination of environmental damage in the Arctic from June to September collected metal debris in the western part of Kildin. The military has grouped more than 360 tons of scrap metal for removal from the island. Last year, they collected about 300 tons of metal debris left over from the Soviet period of the development of Kildin.

The removal of scrap metal from the island is carried out on KamAZ trucks of the rear service battalion of the Northern Fleet. The loaded vehicles enter the twin-deck of a large landing ship, which delivers them to the unloading point on the coast of the Kola Bay, from where scrap metal is transferred to a warehouse near Murmansk for further processing.

Environmental clean-up of the Arctic is one of the priority tasks of the Northern Fleet’s logistics system, which is carried out annually in the summer-autumn period for several years. Large-scale work on Kildin Island was first started last summer. Previously, the cleaning of the island and the removal of garbage were one-off.

The main work to eliminate environmental damage in the Arctic was carried out by the Severomors on Kotelny Island in the Laptev Sea, where the Northern Clover military base of the Northern Fleet is located. Over the five years of operation, more than 3.5 thousand tons of metal waste was removed on the island, most of which were barrels of fuel and lubricants left there until the 90s of the last century.
