The hydrographic vessel “Horizon” under the command of Vitaly Khopryachkov returned to the base of the hydrographic vessels of the Northern Fleet – the village of Mishukovo (which is located on the left bank of the Kola Bay opposite the city of Murmansk) from a month and a half Arctic cruise. During August and September, its crew and hydrographic group, headed by Captain 3rd Rank Denis Bechtold, successfully completed the tasks of studying little-explored areas of the World Ocean off the northern islands of the Franz Josef Land archipelago.

In the course of comprehensive oceanographic work, the bottom topography was surveyed with a total volume of more than 11 thousand kilometers, water and soil samples were taken in the water area of the Barents and Kara Seas. The weather favored research, so specialists from the hydrographic service managed to land on the Arctic islands in order to clarify changes in the coastline.

The results of the campaign were highly appreciated by the command of the hydrographic service of the fleet.

The hydrographic vessel “Horizon” is a permanent member of research oceanographic expeditions in the seas of the Arctic Ocean. With the arrival of the vessel at the base, the practical part of the seasonal high-latitude oceanographic research in the Arctic has been completed. In the near future, the hydrographers of the Northern Fleet will deal with the processing of the results obtained and making the appropriate corrections to the nautical charts and directions.

The hydrographic vessel Romuald Muklevich returned to Mishukovo last week. For 52 days it took part in the complex expedition of the Northern Fleet and the Russian Geographical Society “Remember the War”. The research was carried out in the waters of the Barents and Kara Seas, off the coast of Severny Novaya Zemlya Island and the continental coast, where the routes of northern convoys passed during the Great Patriotic War.
