Attention should be paid not only to the nutrition and maintenance of the animal, but also to its health.

On International Rabbit Day, which is celebrated on September 25, the specialists of the capital Veterinary Committee gave some tips for caring for eared pets.

First acquaintance: how to choose a rabbit

When choosing a rabbit, you should pay attention to its appearance and behavior. A healthy animal will have a smooth and shiny coat, clean eyes and nose, and a good appetite. The pet will be noticeably active.

The best place to buy a rabbit is at a pet store. There the pets are examined by veterinarians and all the necessary documents are drawn up. For keeping in an apartment, you should choose small decorative rabbits.

First chores: what is needed for an eared

Before you bring the rabbit into the house, you need to think over everything to the smallest detail. The pet needs a spacious cage or aviary where he will live. Inside, you need to place a house, a drinker, a hay feeder, food bowls and a special container for treats, as well as toys and other structures for active pastime.

You can also purchase a harness, you will need it if the owners decide to walk the pet in the warm season. It is better to bring the rabbit home in a special carrier. You can buy it at a pet store.

The main thing is health

After the rabbit gets comfortable in a new place, you need to take him to the veterinarian. A specialist will assess the health of the animal and give the necessary recommendations. He also needs to be vaccinated. Rabbits are annually vaccinated against myxomatosis and hemorrhagic disease. Over the past year, the capital’s veterinarians have received more than 300 rabbits.

“Like any other pet, the rabbit must be brought in for medical examination once a year. Preventive examinations help to identify the disease at an early stage and prevent serious consequences. Teeth should be checked every six months. They grow very quickly in these pets. Usually the main tool for grinding teeth is hay. Additionally, you can buy a special wooden toy, there are a lot of them in pet stores, ”said Tatyana Astapova, a veterinarian-ratologist at the Animal Disease Control Station of the North-Western Administrative District of Moscow.

For consultation and examination, you can bring your pet to a general practice veterinarian, but in case of more serious questions, it is better to contact a narrow-profile specialist – a ratologist.

You can get help from a veterinarian-ratologist in 10 state veterinary clinics of the city. Doctors are accepted in the South, North, East, West, South-East, North-West and Zelenograd administrative districts of the city. You can make an appointment online on the portal, in the mobile application “Moscow State Services” or by phone: +7 (495) 612-04-25.

Feeding and grooming: tips for keeping

The rabbit should be fed with special dry food; hay must be included in its diet. During the day, the pet should eat an armful of dry grass equal to its size. Alternatively, you can give carrots, cucumbers, beets, pumpkins, and apples. In this case, the rabbit should always have access to fresh water.

To keep your animal healthy and shiny, you need to brush it several times a week. Short-haired rabbits can be combed out with a special comb, for long-haired rabbits you will need a slicker – it will perfectly cope with tangles. The rabbit can also be taken to grooming, where specialists will put the pet’s coat in order.
