On September 22, the final stage of the Rugby-7 Cup of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation among cadets of the universities of the Ministry of Defense of Russia started. According to the results of 18 matches of the group stage, all participants in the playoffs of the tournament were determined.
A welcoming speech at the opening ceremony was made by Assistant Commander of the Black Sea Fleet for Physical Training Captain 1st Rank Oleg Khomenko, Master of Sports of the USSR in football, member of the Council of CSKA Veterans, Honored Worker of Physical Culture Anatoly Korobochka and Sports Director of the Russian Rugby Federation Foundation for the development of rugby in Armed Forces and law enforcement agencies Bogdan Dubina. The symbolic first hit on the ball at the tournament was made by the ex-player and coach of the Central Sports Club of the Army Anatoly Korobochka.
The tournament itself is being held for the third time and has an annual status. This rally has its own distinctive features. Firstly, it is held for the first time in Sevastopol, the two previous draws were held in Moscow. Secondly, according to the decision of State Secretary – Deputy Minister of Defense of Russia Nikolai Pankov, 32 participating teams were preliminarily divided into 5 regional divisions, where 2 qualifying stages were held. The strongest 14 teams came to the south of Russia to fight for the coveted trophy.
The matches of the first day turned out to be quite productive. Many teams saw each other for the first time in a year and it was rather difficult to predict the attacking maneuvers of their opponents. The strongest in their groups were 8 teams: VIFK, VA VKO, VUNC VVS VVA, TOVVMU, VKA im. A.F. Mozhaisky, OABII, TVVIKU, VUNTS Navy VMA. It is they who will compete for the main prize.
