Plant trees, organize a clean-up day, collect food for animals, conduct an ecological quest. Read about how environmental volunteers help the city in this article.

Ecology is an extremely relevant topic for any metropolis, especially for such a large city as Moscow. Our city is made cleaner not only by specialized services, but also by environmental volunteers, whose total number in the capital is approaching five thousand. Information, expert and consulting support is provided by the resource center “Mosvolonter”.

“The popularity of this type of volunteering is growing rapidly. In 2021, environmental volunteers have already provided more than five thousand hours of assistance. And among the partners supporting such initiatives are over 30 different organizations. Arrangement of reserves, subbotniks, environmental campaigns, lectures on an ecological lifestyle, planting trees and much more. We plan to further expand this area, “- said

Ekaterina Dragunova, chairman Committee for public relations and youth policy of the city of Moscow.

This year, dozens of thematic events have already taken place in the city, including the “Green Office” campaign. During it, volunteers collected recyclable materials for recycling. And within the framework of another action – “Sated Hare” – Muscovites collected 265 kilograms of food for hares living in the protected areas of the capital.

In addition, the educational project “Eco-life in the megalopolis. Education ”, a flash mob was organized to collect and recycle unnecessary footwear # Dobrobuv, a relay race # EcoGTO took place, together with the State Agrarian University“ Moscow State Zoological Park ”an ecological and educational quest“ We live environmentally ”was held, in which about a thousand people took part.

“It all starts with small deeds”

Muscovite Elena Knyazeva has been volunteering since 2007, and joined environmental volunteers a year ago. For her, it all started with lectures at the Open Ecological University of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, dedicated to the separate collection of waste:

“After finishing the course, I planned to start organizing quests and trainings on ecology for young people. But the pandemic made its own adjustments, a number of face-to-face volunteer projects had to be curtailed. However, it was then that I was lucky enough to get acquainted with the initiative group “Orderlies of the Malakhovsky Forest”, which organized weekly subbotniks. I joined them with pleasure. “

Elena likes to repeat: everything starts with small deeds. As an environmental volunteer, she organized waste collection at home: plastic, caps, batteries, paper, glass – all this is not thrown into the trash, but sorted.

“We have installed energy-saving light bulbs and are monitoring water consumption. From time to time we arrange eco-waste: we give unnecessary things to other people. In addition, I, of course, take an active part in environmental campaigns. Whenever possible, we participate in them with the whole family, ”she says.

Elena has organized eco-quizzes for children and their parents several times. And in the near future – to teach high school students in the neighboring children’s creativity center, to conduct eco-quests for the smallest, so that children understand the importance of respect for nature.

“Environmental volunteering in Moscow has a great future, it can become a mass movement. There is no need for education, age is also not a hindrance – absolutely everyone can take part, and the benefits will be enormous. Moreover, Mosvolonter provides us with all-round assistance. The main thing is to start acting, ”Elena Knyazeva is sure.

“Easy, fun, useful”

Anna Cherkasova graduated from the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov with a degree in ecology and environmental management. Therefore, the topic of eco-volunteering is very close to her.

“Our activity allows us not only to talk about environmental problems, but also to solve them. Moreover, it is not limited to garbage collection, as many people think. The spectrum is extremely wide – from conducting social networks for the purpose of education to organizing mass environmental actions, ”says Anna.

Environmental volunteers help to learn more about ecology by spreading information in schools, universities, discussion platforms, conferences, and in the media. Their main mission is to convey to others that it is easy, fun and useful to preserve nature and reduce the negative impact on it.

“One of the last major events where I participated with other guys from Mosvolonter was the World Cleanliness Day campaign. We collected a lot of bags of garbage, which, after being sorted into fractions, went for recycling, and we also ran a couple of educational games on sorting waste and leading an eco-friendly lifestyle. I would also like to note the first All-Russian Forum “Ecosystem”. For the first time, specialized scientists from all over the country gathered on one discussion platform to propose solutions to environmental problems. Many of these solutions were submitted for inclusion in the national project “Ecology”, ”says Anna Cherkasova.
