Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will meet on Tuesday with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Shon. The parties will discuss strengthening trade and economic cooperation and coordination of the two countries at international platforms.

This is the first official visit to Russia for the head of the Vietnamese diplomatic service. In addition to meeting with Lavrov, he is scheduled to hold talks on the same day with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko, co-chairman of the Intergovernmental Russian-Vietnamese Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation.

The dialogue between the two countries is active, including at the highest level. In March, the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Nikolai Patrushev visited Vietnam. Lavrov and Bui Thanh Shon also spoke on the phone.

Multidimensional collaboration

The Russian Foreign Ministry drew attention to the fact that in recent years, cooperation between the two countries in the trade and economic sphere has been actively developing. At the end of 2020, bilateral trade increased by 15.2% compared to the previous one and amounted to $ 5.67 billion. The fuel and energy sector is the flagship in this area. The joint venture Vietsovpetro operates, Gazprom operates on the continental shelf of Vietnam, Novatek and Zarubezhneft are negotiating to join the project to build a terminal for receiving liquefied natural gas and a gas power plant in the south of the republic.

In addition, work is underway to organize production in the republic of the products of the Russian auto concerns “Gaz” and “Kamaz”.

A number of Russian regions are showing interest in developing trade and economic cooperation with Vietnam, in particular Moscow, St. Petersburg, Primorsky Krai, Kaluga Region, Tatarstan, the Foreign Ministry noted. “The largest projects with Vietnamese investments are the construction of dairy complexes in the Moscow and Kaluga regions, as well as in Primorye,” the diplomatic department noted.

Cooperation in the medical field also continues to develop. This year, the Russian Federation has donated 15,000 doses of Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine to Vietnam. And on September 24, the Vietnamese pharmaceutical company Vabiotech announced the successful production of the first batch of this Russian drug at its facilities.
