Near the village of Zheleznaya Gora, Olonetsky District, during the search expedition “Front Roads of Karelia”, which took place within the framework of the All-Russian Watch of Memory of 2021, representatives of the Vidlitsky Border search detachment, together with servicemen of the Ivanovo Guards Airborne Force, discovered the remains of three paratroopers of the 98th Guards rifle division. They died in 1944 during the Svir-Petrozavodsk operation.

According to the search engines, the bodies of the heroes have been lying in the no-man’s land for more than 7 decades. The many fragments found in this place indicate that the guardsmen of the “winged infantry” were killed by mortar and artillery shelling.

Also, along with the remains were found personal belongings of the soldiers, insignia “Guard” and “Parachutist”, watches and other items. No medallions with the personal data of the paratroopers were found.

Due to unfavorable weather conditions and heavy soil at the site, it was not possible to complete the search work to the end, as a result of which they will continue at a later date.

Three heroes died in a battle near the village of Iron Mountain, before which, together with comrades, already buried in a brotherly cemetery, they tried to break through the bullets and fragments of the enemy.

The personal belongings of the fallen paratroopers, who laid down their heads on the battlefield, will be transferred to the room of Battle Glory of the Ivanovo Guards Svirsky Order of Kutuzov, II degree of the airborne unit stationed in the city of Ivanovo.

The burial ritual took place on the territory of the Memorial of Military Glory in the village of Vidlitsy, where, together with the found soldiers, the remains of 38 more soldiers who died in 1944 during the liberation of the Olonets region of the Republic of Karelia were buried.

For reference:

1005 days – from September 1941 to June 1944 – the Svir River was the leading edge of the Karelian Front. The Svir line became an insurmountable obstacle on the way of the enemy, who was trying to encircle Leningrad with a second blockade ring. The defense of Lodeynoye Pole and Svirsky border made possible the existence of the legendary “Road of Life”.

The battles for the Svir border became an example of the greatest feat and heroism of the Soviet people. The successful actions of the troops at Lodeynoye Pole played an important role in the Great Patriotic War, allowing Finland to be withdrawn from the war and thereby redirected the Karelian units of Soviet troops to fight the enemy on other fronts.

For military exploits, more than 40 units and formations of the Karelian Front were given the honorary title “Svirskys”, 52 soldiers were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, of which 16 were servicemen of the Ivanovo Guards unit of the Airborne Forces.
