The Dostoevsky Literary Memorial Museum hosted a round table “The Book in Prison” with the participation of representatives of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia, the Faculty of Psychology of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, the leadership of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, the University of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia, the Public Council at the Federal Penitentiary Service, representatives of the Academy of Arts, the Union of Writers, the Union of Writers and the POC.
The event was held within the framework of the All-Russian action “The Roads of Redemption” dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the birth of Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky.
The choice of the venue for the round table is very symbolic. In the house where the Dostoevsky Literary and Memorial Museum is now located, the writer rented an apartment twice: for a very short time in 1846 and from October 1878 until the day of his death – January 28, 1881.
At the round table, they discussed the issues of replenishing the book fund of libraries of institutions of the penitentiary system of the region, the possibility of writers and writers to visit correctional institutions to popularize reading and books.
In addition, Deputy Chairman of the Writers ‘Union of St. Petersburg, Director of the Strugatsky Brothers Foundation, Chairman of the ABS Prize Organizing Committee Sergei Arno proposed to sign a cooperation agreement between the Writers’ Union of St. Petersburg and the regional Federal Penitentiary Service. He noted that the Writers’ Union could transfer books with autographs of authors to correctional institutions, organize master classes for employees and convicts.
According to the participants of the action, the complex of events dedicated to the great Russian writer carries an educational mission, helps the society to look at the convicts with different eyes, and make the work of employees of educational and psychological services more effective, deep and stable.
